Mapping Spanish Safe Seats

El Diario has released an interactive map which reveals the regional nature of support for the main Spanish political parties. The map shows the 2,457 Spanish electoral districts where the same party has won in every election since 1982.

One in four Spanish electoral districts are 'safe seats', electoral districts where the local electorate have returned the same political party for over 30 years.  This map of Spanish safe seats reveals the regional nature of support for the main political parties in Spain, revealing areas where the parties have enjoyed consistent support from local voters.

In the south of the country all the safe seats have been won by the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). The conservative People's Party (PP) enjoys more electoral success in the north of the country, where the party holds the majority of the safe seats. In Catalonia the now dissolved Convergence and Union party (CIU) has won the majority of safe seats since 1982.
